Nate and I spent our honeymoon in Costa Rica and we loved it! Both of us speak Spanish due to missions we served for our church, Nate in Mexico and me in Spain, so we really wanted to go somewhere that we could use our second language.
And if you’re wondering, we do speak Spanish to Parker in the hopes that he will know it as well.
At the time (2016), my parents had timeshare points we could use and after researching a ton of places, we settled on booking our stay with Hotel Condovac La Costa in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.
Let me tell you, we do not regret any part of it! And we are trying to plan a return trip with Parker too!
There are many reasons why we loved it here and I could literally talk for hours on it, but I’m sure you will understand a little more after reading my thoughts. Perhaps it seems more magical because it was also our honeymoon so both Nate and I were on Cloud 9 no matter what, but I do believe it is a magical place.
I have to say though, that it probably was a different experience for us because we speak Spanish. The employees at Condovac speak English well, but they obviously feel more comfortable speaking in their native tongue. Plus, Nate and I want to keep up our own skills as best as possible so we tried to only speak Spanish to everyone.
Here are 7 special luxuries you get at Condovac La Costa!
1. Beach
Sure, it is a beach resort, but when you are here, it is your beach. There are no other resorts around it so it is just you and the ocean. In fact, there are a lot of trees surrounding the area which makes it feel even more secluded. We also came at the end of October, so we were one of the only tourists there. Needless to say, we felt like we had the entire place to ourselves and we were loving it!
There is a pool on the resort as well, but we prefer the beach.
2. Wildlife
Due to its location and natural environment, there are many wild animals to see. I don’t know about you, but I love feeling like I’m actually a part of the world that way (unless they come into my room!) On our way to the resort, our taxi driver actually stopped the car because their was a black jaguar on the side of the road! And on our frequent walks around the resort, we saw many lizards, crabs, and exotic birds!
3. Food
I have to warn you that food is not included at Condovac. Breakfast is a separate fee, which we paid for upon arrival. Every morning, we walked up to their main restaurant and ate at their breakfast buffet. Fresh mangos and melons, tropical drinks, and authentic Costa Rican foods like gallo pinto every day was to die for! We purposely always chose to sit in the seats on the big balcony because of the ocean view, the birds who would fly in right next to us, and the warm sun.
As for lunch and dinner, you can either go to a restaurant or make food using the kitchen in your villa.
4. Accessible Stores
Speaking of cooking food, you can buy it at the convenience store on campus! They sell cans and boxes of food, milk, bread, sunscreen, hair ties, medicine, and anything else you may need during your stay.
Nate and I actually decided to explore the outside area a bit. After asking directions and walking down the main road a bit, we found a local grocery store where we bought most of our groceries for the week. You do need to know Spanish to do this though because even the products are only in Spanish.
5. Excursions
Condovac La Costa offers several different excursions to go on that leave straight from their lobby. We went on a zip lining adventure at The Congo Trail after hearing about it from people on the beach. Sure enough, they had a shuttle bus pick us up outside the lobby of the resort and take us straight to the zip lining course. Our driver even acted as a tour guide as he showed us certain places along the way and answered our questions about the area.
In addition, there is a shuttle bus that travels throughout the resort so you don’t have to walk anywhere if you don’t want to.
6. Customer Service
Just imagine, you arrive at a beautiful resort to enjoy your honeymoon, but then have a random allergic reaction and instead spend days inside your room with a rash all over your body. Yep, that happened to me…
Although we had to stay inside more than we anticipated, the employees at Condovac were the most kind and friendliest we have ever met! When Nate called the lobby to ask where we could find medicine and explain our situation, they immediately did everything they could to help. On the one day when I couldn’t make it out to the breakfast buffet, they delivered boxes of food to our door. And when they did see us outside, they called us by our names and asked how I was doing. We seriously felt like best friends when we left.
7. Villas
I can’t talk about Condovac La Costa without talking about the actual accommodations! They offer two types of villas: standard and platinum. We stayed in a standard villa, which felt like platinum to us. It had a front room with a couch, dining table, and full kitchen equipped with a blender, rice cooker, microwave, toaster, and electric pan. Obviously, it’s very easy to cook your own food in your villa. The next area had a sink in the hall with the bathroom next to it. We loved the shower because it had a hand-held shower head – who doesn’t love those? The bedroom had two double beds with a television set and air conditioning unit. Plus, they make the towels look like doves!

You had me at your first two points! What a fun trip!
Haha thanks!
I love the privacy you had! My husband and I aren’t fans of too many people, so that’s a big plus.
Me too! They really made us feel like we were the only ones there.
My brother honeymooned in Costa Rica, they loved it!

Don’t we all! But things are opening up quickly!

What a beautiful place for a honeymoon!
How fun! Would love to go somewhere to practice the language as well – this would be great!
Amazing! I’m so ready for a beach!
I served my mission in Japan and was able to finally really learn the language while there. Going to visit Japan again 20 years later with my ten year old son, was a lot easier that I knew the language. I’m so rusty though. I’m sure your experience was even more special because there was less of a language barrier BUT your seven points are great for all. I’d love to go too! But maybe with a friend that can speak Spanish. 😉
