One of the best things Nate and I did while on our honeymoon in Costa Rica was ziplining! We had both been ziplining before so we knew the basics of what to expect and that’s why we were so excited to go. What can I say? We love adventure!
Although we had experienced the thrill of ziplining in the past, it was nothing compared to the jungle of Costa Rica. It was a much different atmosphere than the beach at Hotel Condovac La Costa, that’s for sure.
Due to its easy access from our resort in Playa Hermosa (they literally picked us up in a shuttle bus straight from the lobby) and the reviews we heard, we knew we had to go with The Congo Trail for our day of ziplining.
They did not disappoint! There was one other American couple that also came along so we could all get to know each other on the way. Our bus driver even acted as a tour guide, spitting out facts about Costa Rica and each area we drove by.
Maybe Tip #1 should be to make sure you have awesome tour guides?
We had the absolute best experience at The Congo Trail in Costa Rica and I want to give you the same. Here are 5 tips that will teach you how to have the best experience ziplining in Costa Rica!
Speak a Little Spanish
You don’t need to learn a ton of Spanish or really even a little to go ziplining. Your tour guides should know enough English to communicate well, but I think learning the language of the place your in should be a common courtesy. Nate and I already speak Spanish and it made our guides feel a lot more comfortable with us because they knew they could joke around and we could chime in. Even learning translated phrases like “You’re kidding” or “You’re crazy” when you’re faced with a long cable to descend can put a smile on their faces.
Leave Your Camera at the Hotel
As a blogger and lover of memories, I brought my camera around with me everywhere. I even brought it to our canopy tour – only to leave it in a bag in a locker at the entrance. Due to how high you are and how fast you fly down the cables, they know the potential of having something fall. You don’t want that. To solve the problem, one of our tour guides brought the company camera along and took pictures for us. I think it only cost $15 for the whole DVD of our pictures! Next time, I will just leave everything at our hotel room.
Dress for Adventure
When getting dressed to go ziplining in Costa Rica, there are several things you need to keep in mind. First, it’s hot, so keep your clothes cool. Second, you will be flying and climbing through the jungle, so keep your clothes sturdy and wear closed-toe, reliable shoes like sneakers. I wore jean shorts and a T-shirt and felt fine. In addition, make sure to wear lots of sunscreen and bug spray. Trust me, you will need it. And for the women, keeping your hair up will ensure it doesn’t get stuck in any of the cables. Choose wisely.
Enjoy the Sights
You’re on vacation in a different country! Make sure to look around you as you are flying or climbing to the next spot. You might be able to see some monkeys or other cool animals. The Congo Trail actually has signs set up all along the trail with information on the trees and flowers that were around us. And of course, our guides could always give more information than what was on the little signs.
Smile & Have Fun
Okay, this tip is really for me when we go back. I was so nervous about not breaking early or late enough that I had the double chin of regret in almost all my pictures! Yeah, it’s pretty embarrassing. Nate, on the other hand, looks like he’s having the time of his life on that rope. Let’s all be more like Nate and actually let ourselves have fun more.
