9 Fall Traditions for Families with Toddlers

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I struggle coming up with fun things for my family to do. Plus, who has the schedule to do a hundred different activities every day of the week?

We just don’t have the time!

With Nate going to school and an internship, on top of his normal full-time job, he doesn’t have a ton of free time to spare. By the time we do find an hour or two to spend as a family, it can be last minute so we end up just sitting at home watching a movie.

Does that sound familiar?

This fall, I wanted to change what our normal looks like. As a result, I took my family to Wilkerson Farm in Orem, Utah for a night of fun fall activities. It was a blast! They literally have everything related to fall in one place, plus it’s all kid-friendly. No haunted houses here, which is nice because my two year old son would be terrified if they did!

What does that mean exactly? It means that instead of having to plan out multiple days and locations of fall festivities, we can do it all in one place and one time. And that makes me very happy!

If you live in Utah or plan on making your way out here, I highly recommend stopping by! If not, leave a comment below and tell me where you will be making these traditions with your family.

9 Fall Traditions for Families with Toddlers

1. Take Fall Family Photos

As they say, did fall really exist if you didn’t take a picture of it? Just kidding, but I do love family pictures. It was really important to me that we could get a couple good family shots this year before our daughter arrives in November. Fortunately, Wilkerson Farm has so many picturesque spots that it was easy to choose locations. The hard part was getting Parker to look and smile!

I already have more photoshoot ideas for the next time we go to Wilkerson Farm. You can never have too many pictures, right?

Pro Tip: When you take your own family photos, try to plan how the lighting and backdrops will be because that can help you choose an outfit for everyone. My husband wore a dark peach shirt, which looked great on him, but not so great in front of a red barn.

2. Go on a Tractor Ride

Get out those overalls and boots, because you’re going on a tractor ride! I have always loved anything related to farms so tractor rides are kind of my thing. I love that you can enjoy the scenery and special time with your group.

It’s also a great opportunity to teach your kids about what they’re seeing. With Parker, we point out certain colors he is learning and try to count the amount of hay bales in the wagon.

3. Pick Pumpkins

Picking pumpkins is a fall tradition you just can’t skip. Whether you choose to get some right when fall starts so you can decorate your house with them or choose to wait until it’s closer to Halloween, you will need pumpkins eventually.

The timing worked out great for us because the week leading up to our first trip to Wilkerson Farm, Parker learned about the Spanish letter C (Calabaza = Pumpkin). We were able to teach him about pumpkins and he was happy to actually be able to touch them.

4. Snack on Kettle Corn

My husband loves popcorn and therefore loves how much kettle corn is around in the fall. I don’t know what it is, but it always brings back the best childhood memories. Obviously, we had to get ourselves a bag! You can snack on it as you walk around the farm or save some for a movie night with hot chocolate and cozy blankets (we did both).

Another reason we like Wilkerson Farm is because they keep everything local. Even the kettle corn they sell comes from Poppin’ Jacks, a small family-owned business in Utah. It’s nice to know that our contribution is helping our neighbors.

5. Eat from a Food Truck

What is your favorite food to eat in the fall? No matter what it is, Wilkerson Farm will have it! Every night they host a different food truck so if you plan it right, you can have your favorite kind of food!

I love this idea for several reasons. First, I hate cooking so I will do anything to avoid it. Second, it’s another local business to support. And third, the fun doesn’t have to end just because you need to feed your family. It only adds to the experience!

Wilkerson Farm has plenty of colorful picnic tables and outdoor seating to accommodate everyone in your party as well.

6. Practice Your Lasso Skills

Yes, you read that right. Practice your lasso skills! I can’t be the only person who thinks of rodeos and farms when fall comes around. Your kids will love swinging the rope over their heads and trying to lasso a wooden animal. Parker sure did!

If your family is like mine, it will soon become a friendly competition of who can lasso better. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I won 🙂

You can even bring the fun home and create your own makeshift animal for your family to practice lassoing. You never know if your child will become a future cowboy all thanks to you!

7. Visit a Farmyard

Speaking of lassoing animals, you also need to see them! Wilkerson Farm has a little farmyard complete with chickens, turkey, pigs, goats, and sheep. Although they are behind a fence, you can still interact and talk to them.

That may have been my favorite part of our fall family night, to be honest. Nate and Parker took turns “communicating” with the turkey (named Leftovers, by the way), and the chickens almost attacked our kettle corn! We actually had to prevent Parker from feeding them. The poor kid just wanted to share!

8. Mount Fall-Themed Rides

Wilkerson Farm actually calls their place a Fall Fair, and for good reason. It’s not just regular pumpkins and corn there. Nope, they have fair rides! I will repeat, Fair Rides!

Due to my current state of being pregnant, I didn’t go on any of the rides, but Nate took Parker. Don’t let Parker’s face fool you though, he didn’t want to get off! Their rides consist of Wilkerson’s Windmill (big swings), Dust Devil (big see-saw), Star Gazer (like a small, but faster ferris wheel), Fruit Salad (teacups), and Shotgun Slides (double slides). Aren’t the names awesome?

9. Complete a Corn Maze

Last, but certainly not least, you have to take your family to a corn maze! I honestly wish corn mazes could be open all year long because I love the excitement of trying to find our way out. And what’s even better is that your kids can get out all their energy.

Parker absolutely loved being able to run free through the corn that towered over his toddler body. Nate would then run after him and the chase would continue. Wilkerson Farm’s corn maze is 4 acres big, with no map to help so you really have to be on top of your maze game.

They also have a mini-maze made out of haystacks just for your toddlers!

  1. We have loved going to fall festivals over the years and have visited various farms in four states now. My kids are slowly outgrowing them, but I have wonderful memories from them through the years.

  2. These are lovely. We have to come up with new traditions this year because so much is different where we are and we aren’t taking our kids out yet with COVID cases still being high in our area. But usually, we go to harvest carnivals, pumpkin patches, and all that!

  3. Sooo Sweet! I remember doing stuff like this when my kids were younger. We used to spend astronomical amounts of money at pick your own pumpkin farms… just for the ambiance and the experience! LOL… I think I loved it more than the kids though!

  4. We love our fall activities but alas so many are closed or cancelled this year. Getting out to enjoy the beauty though is never cancelled.

  5. Wow, that looks like a fun family place to visit. I remember those days of being in school, internship, working and trying to raise two teenagers all on my own. Hang In there!

  6. What a wonderful place to enjoy all the favorite fall activities! We have amazing places like this in my area too and they are so fun.

  7. We went to a farm like this just last weekend and participated in all of these fun activities! It’s so much fun making new memories with our little ones! Fall is our favorite season!
