7 Features of a Great Travel Diaper Bag

We were gifted our first diaper bag by my cousin and his wife when I was pregnant with Parker. It still works well and has satisfied our needs when it comes to packing for him. However, I knew we needed something different now that we will have two children traveling with us.

T-minus 2 months until her due date!

So, in just a couple months we will have a two year old who is not potty trained and a newborn who is also not potty trained. Double the diapers, wipes, bottles (water bottles for Parker), and clothes.

Luckily, I ran into Hap Tim and found the perfect new diaper bag for our family!

This diaper bag has everything you need for multiple kids and traveling. The features I will describe below do pertain to the Hap Tim Diaper Bag Backpack, but they can also serve as a general guideline when searching for your own.

7 Features of a Travel Diaper Bag

1. Pockets, Pockets, & More Pockets

As anyone who takes care of children knows, you can never have too many pockets! You need a pocket for diapers, baby wipes, bottles, keys, a change of clothes, etc. Honestly, what don’t you need a pocket for?

They make finding your items so much easier because you know there is a special place for it all. The Hap Tim diaper bag has 13 pockets, including a mesh one on the inside where I will store our changing pad.

My favorite pockets are on the outside though, as those are easier for Parker to access. I am definitely looking forward to having his backseat help when we need something for the baby.

2. Insulated Pockets

Yes, this could fit under the blanket “Pockets” category, but I believe it requires its own. Insulated pockets are a must in any diaper bag! They work to keep baby bottles warm or water bottles cool so you don’t have to worry about the outside weather affecting this inside temperature.

With Parker’s old diaper bag, we only had one insulated pocket. When he was a newborn, we could maybe squish two of his smallest bottles inside, but it was a real squeeze. In our new Hap Tim bag, the entire outside front pocket is insulated. And inside that are three individual pockets for bottles! Three! There will be plenty of space for our new baby’s bottles, plus anything of Parker’s.

3. Double Decker Design

I didn’t even know this existed until I came across it with Hap Tim! It’s probably my absolute favorite feature of this diaper bag, especially with having two kids.

This diaper bag has a double decker design, aka there are two levels. There is a Velcro flap on the inside of the bag that, if you choose to attach it, separates the bag into two parts – top and bottom. To access the bottom, you simply unzip the pocket on the back.

This means that I can put Parker’s things on the bottom, the baby’s things on the top, and keep everything organized! Or, I can pack a picnic on the bottom and keep the children’s things on top. You can really use the double decker feature however you like. Can you see why it’s the best for multiple kids and traveling now?

4. Spacious

There are two types of travelers: those who pack a lot and those who pack a little. I tend to be the latter. Fortunately, with this diaper bag you can be both! As a strong believer that travel diaper bags should be on the bigger side, this one is awesome.

When I pack for a trip, I try to use as little bags as possible. Nate and I share one and then we usually pack all of Parker’s things in his diaper bag. Now that we will have two kids to pack for, having the extra space this bag offers will be crucial.

5. Padded Shoulder Straps

No matter how you plan your vacation, you will be walking. A lot. Whether it’s walking through the airport, in a big cruise line, or exploring ancient ruins, you will need padded shoulder straps.

They work to help prevent injuries and make sure you last as long as the bag does. The Hap Tim diaper bag backpack also pads the back pocket, which should sit right at your lower back. With all that traveling, having the comfort of the backpack ensures you can last all vacation!

6. Waterproof

This feature is also a must in any diaper bag, but especially if you’re traveling with it. Have you ever been outside and got caught in the rain? What about standing next to a water fountain and your child (or husband) “accidentally” splashes you from behind?

I was actually very surprised by how waterproof the Hap Tim bag is. No, I didn’t test it on purpose, but Parker did spill a cup of water on it. Can you guess what happened?

It beaded! Water droplets beaded to the fabric and didn’t let any water in! Needless to say, I won’t be afraid to take this bag through the rains of Spain 🙂

7. Stylish

Let’s be honest, it really all comes down to the look and design of a diaper bag that persuades us to buy it or not. Even with all the fun features, we want it to look good for the pictures!

I love the cute little button on the outside and the angled zipper on top. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of Europe and my time living in Spain, but I really do love this diaper bag!

Where will you take this on your next vacation?

  1. I once used a very bad quality backpack for 3 days while on our travels and it gave me tremendous neck pain for 4 days. I’m good now, but this bag looks like it has great padded shoulder straps! I also love a lot of pockets. Would love one of these bags!

  2. We are way past needing a diaper bag but if we did we would get one with insulated compartments again. They come in handy. Looks like a nice bag too.

  3. This diaper bag sounds amazing! As a momma of 4 I never have enough space. Even my older kids shove things into the diaper bag and want me to hold it. I love the double decker idea and that it looks just like a regular backpack so Dad won’t be embarrassed to carry it around. Maybe I’ll win one for our next Disney World trip! Florida, here we come…

  4. Though I don’t plan on traveling for a bit since I recently returned to Denver from Hawaii, my daughter-in-law is going to vacation in Grand Lake, CO with my son and their toddler. They are expecting again in late February, and I think she would love everything about this great diaper bag.

  5. I feel that many pockets is a must. Once I had left my bag at the park and when I went back for it it had been opened everywhere and some things had been taken however my $40 were still there thanks to a super secret pocket! Lol

  6. Very insightful information that I need to keep! I plan to have children very very soon and travel at the same time. So this definitely helps a lot for my fiance and I!!!

    1. Thank you! There is nothing more fun in my opinion than traveling with kids. I wish you and your fiance the best!
